Best places to live in Chennai, preferably near good schools

We may be relocating to Chennai next year, and would like information on neighborhoods that are close to good schools (for instance, American International School -- but that%26#39;s not definite), and within walking distance of markets, etc. We don%26#39;t necessarily want to live in an expat community, however we wouldn%26#39;t rule it out if it met our other requirements (location, location, location...) We want a good area for primary-school age children. Thank you!

There are lot of location in chennai which are very near to good schools. For instance, as per your post if you want to look for an location to live near to American School, you can get a good accomodation which is close to markets, good community place, a peaceful beach near to Adyar, Besant Nagar (One of the posh area in Chennai). There are other areas in Chennai like Anna Nagar which has very close proximity with good schools.

Thank you very much for your help. That gives us some definite starting points to consider for places to live, and being near a beach would be a plus.

Hi, I%26#39;m living in Chennai, R.A.Puram is a very nice area, if you get an auto the drivers call it a posh area. I wouldn%26#39;t recommend living near the markets as those areas are very hectic. I agree with the other post the Besant Negar is a nice place. The American school is the best from what I%26#39;ve heard although I don%26#39;t have children and is in the south of Chennai (as are both these areas!) Good luck!

The great thing about Besant nagar is that it is logistically located in such a way that there is virtually o ';pass through'; traffic. It tends to get crowded and also newer construction is less as that area has a lot of old ';housing societies'; and Government buldings.

At the same time with a bus Terminus, Retirees jump on for a bus ride.

You should simply call Global Adjustments. They do a good job of helping expats settle in.

We also live in Chennai. Ther e is no ';expat area'; - foreigners live all over the city. A lot of them live on ECR, near the beach. Besant Nagar, Poes Garden, Boat Club Road, Kotturpuram, Alwarpet, Nungumbakkam - these are all popular areas. A lot depends on yoru price range and whether you want a free-standing home, a pool, or an apartment.

Housing is hard to find and can be very expensive, depending on your expectations. I highly recommend the Oversea%26#39;s Women%26#39;s Club book ';At Home in Madras';. It is out of print and unavailable in bookstores, but you can get a copy from Alison Emoto (phone 91 9841024652). She does some real estate work also; I am not particularly recommending her, as I have not used her personally, but I bought my copy of the book off of her. The book has a chapter on housing in Chennai which is EXCELLENT.

As for our experience, search for my blog (myfamilymovestoindia) on opera.com.

Hope you decide to come,

I lived in Thiruvanmiyur for 25 years, and there are some pockets of it which are really nice. I would second looking at Besant Nagar, Adyar and also Valmiki Nagar.
