Is the Meenakshi Temple being repaired/repainted???

Hi forum,

A friend who visited the Meenakshi Temple in January told me that the temple is completely covered as it is being repaired or repainted. Is this still the case? And how long can this be expected to take?

I really want to see the temple in all its glory when I visit!

Hi Hunbille

Your friend is right. This has been going on since October 2008. The %26#39;Kumbhabishekam%26#39; (the Sanskrit term for anointment) is scheduled for April and work is currently underway. Check out this link.

Thank you Rajan! I won%26#39;t be visiting until after that time, so it looks like I%26#39;ll be lucky...

You could also consider visiting the magnificent Sri Ranganathaswamy ancient temple citadel at Srirangam, 7km from Trichy. In my opinion, it is a treasure house of art, even more exquisite than the Meenakshiamman complex [and less crowded], although a post restoration Meenakshiamman temple will certainly be worth a visit.

There are a lot of things to see and do in the Trichy Tanjore region as well.

I am actually planning to visit the Trichy area and the temple - glad to hear that it%26#39;s a great thing to see.

If you are interested Hunbille, a not too well known but easily do-able day trip from Trichy is to Viralimalai [temple and peacock sanctuary], Sittanavasal [ancient Jaina caves], Narthamalai [first structural stone temple] and back.

If you are going on to Tanjore, take the scenic country riverside road route via the Grand Anaicut [Kallanai] - a 2000yr old stone dam that still works!

Hi Forum,

Does anyone know if restoration work at Meenakshi Temple is on schedule, and will be completed in April? Planning a visit in mid-May. Would appreciate an update before finalizing travel plans.

Thanks, Marisol

I am told that it is a bit behind schedule (maybe by a week or 10 days).

However, the site flashes news which is frequently updated that the Kumbabishekam is as per the original schedule - which is on the 8th of April 2009. I doubt that this will be moved for quite a few leading pundits were involved in zeroing in on the auspicious day and hour for this grand event.

so i guess, it would be completed as planned -even if it means adding extra hours and hands to get it done . . .
