Goan Virgin

Well it was our first time in Goa and did not know what to expect.

Lets start with the arrival at the airport this was manic with the porters just chucking every ones bags on the floor at the begining of the belt so you had to climb a mountain to get to your bag, then fight the lads off who want to carry your bag for all of 10 yards for a £1.

DO NOT change any money at the airport as they are crooks and i got caught, my own fault, but it was not a good start.

Rock the taxi driver picked us up and the journey to Calangute was a eye opener, there seems to be no rules on the road, only that you have to toot your horn every 5 yards...

On arrival at the Nizmar the room was not ready, but a cold glass of Kingfisher was(my kind of welcome), we were shown to our room by one of the porters,it was on the top floor overlooking the pool room 113, the room was OK but needed a little TLC, the missus was not happy i could tell, but i said sleep on it and it will look different tommorrow as it is a bit of a culture shock if your are a Goa Virgin, the main thing is the utter filth every where outside the hotel and of course there are no footpaths so you take your life in your hands when you go out, but why walk when taxis are only 100 rupees.

The Nizmar is well situated for the beaches and restaurants, we liked East meets West, Sulimans Kitchen and a newly opened up one Le Reverie, also we liked Susa Lobos on the beach for great Tandori Kingfish.

Calangute beach is very crowded by the steps as thats where all the day trippers go and they do not move very far, Bagga beach has a lot of water sports on it, i liked Candolim beach the best as it was cleaner and less manic.

We found a good shack called Dommats, where you can get a good Prawn Curry for 110 rupees and cold bottle of Kings for 45 rupees, the missus loved it there and i could tell she was warming to the place. The sea was rough all the time so swimming was not advisable, but there are plenty of lifeguards patrolling the beach making sure the Indian day trippers did not drown. These day trippers are a bit of a pain when they have had beer or two and leer at all the European women which was a little off putting for the ladies.

We went on a trip to the waterfalls this worth a trip, 1hr and 50 mins to get there then a 1 hr drive in a 4x4 to get to the falls which are great, also you get the chance to feed the monkeys which come down to falls for some fruit, they are so tame.

We went to Morjim Beach and Ashvem Beach these were quite beaches with only a few shacks on them, you could say these were the ';Bounty Ad'; beaches, and we really enjoyed our days there.

The food is varied, but we found that when in Rome do as the Romans do and eat fish, we had some great Kingfish dishes, we did hear people moan about thier steaks, my answer to them is if you want eat steaks go to a ';Beefeater';. The Tiger Prawns are to die for as are the King Prawns in many types of different curry sauces.

So in summary, the Nizmar was a good hotel with very friendly staff and clean rooms. Calangute was manic and very dirty. The beaches were great, the food excellent.

Would we go back, if you asked us after 3 days we would have said NO, but now i think we would and we would stay in Candolim not Calangute.

All in all we enjoyed our first trip to Goa even though i was in Dry Dock for 2 days with the Dehli Belly.

I suppose you have to remember it is a 3rd world country and dont expect to much.

Cheers

Martin

Great report Martin,

Thankyou, I enjoyed reading it.

It sounds honest, and I%26#39;m glad you enjoyed your holiday..most posts on here advise not to make your mind up on Goa until day 2 or 3!!

Great report Martin, thanks for sharing :)

I think that is the key to Goa, don%26#39;t make your mind up until you%26#39;ve had a chance to adjust. It is one Hell of a culture shock when you first arrive but you just warm to it and it gets under your skin until you are well and truly hooked!

So glad you and your wife both enjoyed your first visit and hopefully we%26#39;ll see you back on here for future visits :)

Cheers!

Thanks for sharing your views Martin :-)

Why not consider the South the next time? Much quieter and far less manic, we fell in love with it! :-))

Linda

Hello Martin,

thankyou so much for the report. It was really informative and gives a real picture for us newbies.

So glad you enjoyed it all in the end.

Hi Martin...

Thanks for the report..

It does take you a few days to settle down.

My parents %26amp; sis %26amp; brother in law are coming out for their first time.....i expect they will want to kill me after the taxi ride from the airport.....LOL

Your report reminds me of our first visit 12 years ago. If someone had offered us a flight out within the first 24hrs we would have gone. Like you though we hung in there and ended up hooked, returning many times to Candolim, Baga, Arpora and Cavellosim hotels. Never ever fancied staying in Calangute though. Went to Kerala for the second time in Nov/Dec, off again on Saturday to Candolim.

this time next week

just took the suitcases out of the garage, its that time again to start wishing the hours away and thinking this time next week?

  • Park Hyatt Goa

    Hi All,

I am planning my honeymoon trip to the Park Hyatt Resort %26amp; Spa, Goa. The dates are between June 20th-June 25th. I have chosen the Timeless Moments package which includes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Anyone with a recent or past experience there who could share some insight?

    Thanks

    Bump! (sorry, need an answer)

    mosquito net

    Hi,

Panicing a bit bit now reading all the posts regarding lots of mozzies about. I have seen a mosquito net in boots for 20 quid, as i am a bit of a mozzie magnet, and so is the mother inlaw, or do they sell them in baga/arpora/calangute anywhere for cheaper? If they do, could anybody tell me where to get them from and how much.

    mosquito net

you can buy them in Mapusa market for 4 or 500rps problem is most hotel rooms have no where to hang em.

    mosquito net

You can sleep next to my moosis if you want......shes a mozzie magnet too.........lol

Buy a plug in repelant when you get there. I used the old Jungle formula - but it stinks.

Try the local brands with Deit - worked well and without that horrid smell.

YEP, plug in repellant machines are the way to go for your room. i usually put two in. plug em in from about 5 o%26#39;clock pm till morning. never been bitten in the room, that i know of anyway.

    BOB

    Millsey,

There was a recent thread about this in the Kovalam forum. You may want to do a search there.

The Aedes mosquito (Dengue / Chikunguniya) tend to bite when you are out of bed, so nets will not help and you must use repellant anyway.

I have not seen the nets in Goa, but they are unlikely to be different from those available elsewhere in India. The net sizes are often not standard, there is nowhere to hang them in most cases as someone else has noted, they feel stuffy under if you are using a ceiling fan, since the breeze gets cut off. They need to be tucked in under the bed - edges sometimes work loose and mosquitoes move in and that is terrible.

I had at one time checked out a net at Black%26#39;s - much superior to the ones readily available in India. Do not know whether the Boots one is similar.

Plug - ins is what I would recommend as others have done - brand ALL OUT with liquid repellant in it.

';good knight'; are the brand i buy in goa. can%26#39;t fault them.

    BOB

    Thanks everyone,

Save me 20 quid anyway. Plugins it will be then and plenty of smelly repellant.

Oh what fuss just to go on holiday eh?

We also spray the room before we go out at night.....

Make sure you also keep the bathroom door closed during the evening and night as the windows are usually louver ones in there and they get in. Buy your electric mossie killers and liquid or tablets there as they are pennies and fit the plugs much better.

good advice dragonfli, cost for a plugin in goa, about 45 rupees. sooooo cheap. just buy them on your first day there. available all over the place.

    Malaria tablets

My family are of to candolim on the 21st of march and do not have malaria tablets yet as we have all just had stomach bugs and colds and i am worried about making my 10 year old daughter ill again would love any advice please!

    Malaria tablets

Speak to your GP or pharmasist....

    Malaria tablets

The advice is for the two types of tablets (C%26amp;P), but my sister started taking hers this week and they make her ill, so if this keeps up they won%26#39;t be in her system long enough to do the job. I cannot take them for the same reason, and others I can%26#39;t take with prescribed meds I am on, so.... take lots of preventatives, sprays, creams, coils, plug-ins etc.

i%26#39;ve had this problem. i cannot take pauladrine or avoclor etc. what i can take, as can most people, is ';Malorone';. these are quite a lot more expensive, but most people can use them with no side effects.

the cheapest place to get them is ';boots online'; they cost at the moment 拢2-10 each tablet. on the good side, you only need one a day and you only need to take them 2 days prior to the holiday, and 1 week after. it is expensive, but if you can%26#39;t take the others, then its worth it.

    BOB

Which ever you choose to take you had better hurry. As your supposed to start a week before, Malaria is about in Goa, also so its not worth taking chances. Your kids would be best getting the pills as Malaria is rather nasty compared to stomach bug and colds.

    Kovalam reef: Public hearing sought

The artificial coral reef has been put on hold until December. This however could change yet again. The Government did say to the workers, 10 minutes before they left for the airport, that they would pay the money. However, the New Zealand workers had had ebnough of waiting and broken dead lines and so chose to leave and wait for the money to actually appear.

Now the KSMTF have demanded a public hearing regarding many aspects of the proposed work.

Regarding the Coral Reef, it was reported in the Hindu this morning that:-

Work on artificial reef yet to resume

It is yet to resume as the workers have all returned home due to the Government not paying any money on time and the Company involved loosing money.

I have been informed by a worker that the work is due to start in December.

  • Car hire from Agra to Bharatpur via Fathepur Sirki

    Hi everyone,

I was hoping that someone could suggest a car w/driver in Agra.

The plan is to leave Agra around 1PM, drive to Fathepur Sikri and visit for a few hours, then get dropped at Bharatpur train station to catch a 6PM train.

Any suggestions would be appreciated and also if you could let me know what the estimated costs would be as well.

    Thanks!

Car hire from Agra to Bharatpur via Fathepur Sirki

try at www.delhicabs.in , the cost should be less that INR1500

Car hire from Agra to Bharatpur via Fathepur Sirki

I think the price of the car depends on its percieved status. From about 6 or 7 Rs per mile for a little Suzuki, or such, then it might be 10 0r 11 or more per mile for bigger vehicles. If you are in the area, consider visiting Deeg Castle and Palace. It is off the beaten track but a mighty palace.

    Book through your Agra hotel

You can hire cars from Avis also. They have office in Agra at the Trident Hotel. The service is of Avis worldwide standard. Their address is

    Avis

    Trident Hotel

    Fatehbad Road, Agra,

    Phone No: 009105626540666

Agra is a tourist oriented city, hence it is advisable to book vehicle from a reputed hotel/agency only.

I rarely contradict other posters on these forums but I disagree with the last post. Avis is the most expensive car rental company in India and mainly dedicated to the Vilas properties and other Oberoi properties (Oberois own the Avis fanchise in India through a subsidiary). Not really for the hoi polloi. Avoid unless you want to pay through your nose.

    Thanks for the responses.

I am only in Agra for 1/2 day and will not be staying in a hotel there.

I would definitely like to have something pre-booked before arriving so not to get ripped off.

Do you think taking a bus would be a good option?

No there are no good deluxe buses. Try any of these two agents in Agra. Both have been in the business for ages and are well reputed -

    Touraids - Mr Mahatim Singh - +91 93191 00644

    Email - touraids@sancharnet.in

    Travel Bureau - Mr Sunil Gupta - +91 - 98370-33023

    Email - travelbureau@vsnl.com

Or get an agent in Jaipur to report the car to you in Agra. In either case you anyway need to pay for the empty run one way between Jaipur %26amp; Agra.

See Jaipur based agents at the Rajasthan Association of Tour Operators website - www.ratorajasthan.org

Bus wouldn%26#39;t make sense as you dont have to just reach agra, you got to go for sight seeing tooo...

We did Delhi/Agra/Jaipur (with a visit to Fathepur Sikri) a couple weeks ago and used www.iconindiatours.com, which has been recommended on this site. Our driver was great, altho his english was not too hot.

To be honest, Fathepur Sikri was our least favorite part of the trip, altho it%26#39;s easy to visit if you%26#39;re going to be in Agra. It%26#39;s an interesting place, but we were constantly hounded by people hanging around the place who wanted money for everything from tour guide to watching our shoes to donning the proper dress to enter the mosque. It was extremely annoying since we tried to be pleasant, but they wouldn%26#39;t take ';NO'; for an answer. It became impossible to enjoy our visit

and we couldn%26#39;t get out of there fast enough.

I know most of these people depend upon the tourists to make money to feed their families, (and we gave away plenty) but they make it difficult to enjoy these wonderful sites.

Yes ! Avis would be costly, but will provide excellent service.

Given your conditions, bus won%26#39;t suit you. You%26#39;ll have to hire a Taxi only.

    Do You ??

Go anywhere else on holiday in between Goa. If so where do you go Longhaul/Shorthaul

We always go to Goa Jan for 2 - 4 weeks, last year 2 wks Jan then 3 wks Mar, This year spent 1 month in Candolim in Jan.

Am thinking about taking my little 18month old grandson to Butlins for 2 nights next month, he will love all the activities. (im not inviting any comments on that disclosure)

Hopefully a week somewhere in the Med in summer.

Just wondered what you do ??

    Do You ??

been to goa for the last 4 years every jan for 2 weeks and every august take a 2 week hol elsewhere this year will be sri lanka, last year was kenya.also been to turkey a few times and egypt as very hot that time of year, but nothing beats goa.

    Do You ??

Been to Goa Jan 1 month for past 8 years In between flown to Cuba Egypt to hot.Portugal the Costas ok

Going to ELCAMPELLO July the beach there is perfect

for children Half hour from Alicanti about an hour from Benidorm on train.Mostly Apartments No high rise

2 weeks Goa Christmas, 2 weeks Goa March/april. usually a week Greece/turkey/spain . Then if we are really lucky Kenya November, didnt do this last year but did year before. Only trouble is work gets in the way of holidays. have to have unpaid leave as it is. Its a real nuisance that working lol!!!!!

Have been to Goa for 3 weeks mid Nov %26amp; mid feb for a couple of years.

Last October though we did a 4 week tour of China instead. Would have gone to Goa this Feb if Mum hadn%26#39;t been in hospital.

Now we%26#39;re both retired, we plan to do a %26#39;big%26#39; holiday every couple of years, so hopefully Cambodia, Laos %26amp; Vietnam early 2011.

We%26#39;ve had a couple of weeks in Greece in June for the last few years but have booked to go back to Turkey this year for a change.

Last year we also did short breaks to Barcelona %26amp; Dublin (thanks, RyanAir) but Gordon Brown %26amp; Alistair Darling have put paid to that......

We might not have kids but we%26#39;re certainly spending SOMEBODY%26#39;S inheritance. Sorry Sis. LOL

Usually Goa once a year for 3 weeks, either November or over Xmas/New year.

This year I am retiring and have a big birthday end April, so thinking about Cuba for 10 nights. Also going to New York for 6 nights with a friend in September. Have booked 3 weeks Goa in November this year.

Once I%26#39;m retired plan 2 trips to Goa, perhaps November and February for future, depending of course on the prices of flights, packages etc. in this credit crunch era!

I%26#39;ve managed two and a half weeks in Goa this year and will be goig back in November and hopefully January next year. We have a house in Spain (not on the coast) so we go there three or four times a year as well, mostly for long weekends and sometimes for a week in June. Occasionally we get to France for a day or so, but we don%26#39;t seem to have been anywhere else for aaages. Should have gone to Sweden last year but the cat was ill... Our travelling plans for when we retire have mostly gone out of the window along with all the interest rates.

Had a fortnight in Thailand last March and a week in Egypt end of Nov start of December....

    Keep comparing everywhere to Goa.....

There%26#39;s nowhere like it.......but if there is we haven%26#39;t found it yet....

Usually get a week in the Algarve in late August/September aswell as Goa in March, but didn%26#39;t last summer because of our daughters wedding this July and probably won%26#39;t this year either. Still hoping though!

We always do at least 1 long haul, winter sun holiday, then 1 or 2 summer hols. I always look at the summer hols as being least important, my main holiday is the winter one!

As such, I usually just look at what deals are around when booking summer hols, We have had some real bargains over the last few years, however, wherever they have the Euro, you end up spending an absoluter fortune once you get there!! I paid £5.00 for a cup of coffee in Cyprus last year!!

    Susie.x

lat year i went to spain for the w/e then did a week with my daughter back to spain and turkey for 2weeks aug - this year GOA, and mayb a week in the summer if i get a deal last minute. then a week already booked back in turkey oct. cant live without my holidays, what else do we work for other than the bills????

p.s have a great time pizza munching today suesie x

    Hi there

We stayed at Albuquerque Holiday Villas in Candolim, very central, excellent. We paid a little over £350 for the 2 of us for 2 weeks in one of their deluxe suites, but they have got smaller cheaper accomodation. That was back in early January, I think the prices decrease nearer the end of the season. Very clean would stay there every time. They%26#39;ve got a website just enter the name of the villas and it comes up.

we were in Candolim for 3 weeks in january/february, and stayed at a gem of a place called Sanfranciscoholidayhome - very clean and central to the beach and all amenities. It has a swimming pool as well. Their price per night is 1500 rupees, and it is self-catering with a fully equipped kitchen. They are on goaholidayhomes.com and also have their own website.

    hope this helps you

    Food/Drink Poolside daily 'hire'

    Hello everyone,

a tad disappointed on no replies

to my earlier posting/enquiry 5th March re taking fish/seafood into restaurants/corkage on the same

and cost of spending a day by a hotel pool when we are staying in accomodation without aqua facilities.

I hope that one of you local experts could give me some ideas.

    Hope this prompts some information.

    Food/Drink Poolside daily 'hire'

you can definately visit other hotels for the pool although I am sorry i cant help with the cost as I have only stayed at hotels that had the pools but it would be very little i am sure. I doubt you would be able to take your own fish to restaurants although I maybe totally wrong but the restaurants buy the fish fresh in the mornings from the fishermen, its out on display at the front of the restaurants and you pick what you want and then they cook it, crayfish and prawns will be in in tanks, you would be taking half their profit if you brought your own. This doesnt mean to say the fish is always fresh though.

    Food/Drink Poolside daily 'hire'

    Hello Roger

Many hotels will allow you to use their pool facilities, the rainbow restaurant near to the jasmine palace hotel costs 150 INR per day for use of the pool sun lounger and towel.

There are others such as the Sea face hotel which charge a lot more, there they wanted 300INR per person two years ago, needless to say we have not been back...

    Hope this helps

As of lunchtime today the sea defence work is still in full swing with works from the shacks near to the light house up to the Volga restaurant being involved.

There is still room to use the beach to swim and sunbathe but obviously some noise from lorries and occasionally the JCB but mostly manual work in progress with building of stone walls etc, which I personally find fascinating to watch.

The Hawah beach end of Lighthouse beach is unaffected by the works along with Hawah beach itself so there is plenty of beach area to use.

The beach is noticeably quieter this week with less tourists than of late and the seasonal black sands are dominating the beach.

The temperatures also are noticeably higher than of late through the day and nights cooler.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards

    Ian

    Food in Goa

    Hi

My Partner and I were thinking of visiting Goa next year sometime and were wondering what the food is like and where is best to stay?

    Thanks

    Food in Goa

Every kind of food you can think of.

    Really cheap....

Location depends on what you like....

The North is busier than the south.....

    Food in Goa

Last year I really enjoyed various Indian dishes for the first few days...curry and beer...mmmmm

However, by day four I really really enjoyed pie, peas and chips!...lol.

I hear the fish dishes are to die for.

Charity....ALL the dishes are to die for......

There you go DreamCity, from a repeat visitor to Goa, All the food is to die for. Sounds great I think.

    MMmmm Butter Chicken.....OMG I%26#39;m drooling!

    and of course HONEYBEE........woo hoo!!

One of the great things about Goa is that the food is almost always excellent and most places do all sorts of foods so you can eat Indian, Chinese, English Thai, and all in the same restaurant.

I NEVER get tired of eating Indian/Goan food, so I%26#39;m a happy bunny all the time I%26#39;m there. I can do Indian breakfasts, samosas for elevenses, veg masala for lunch and mushroom xacutti for dinner. No wonder I%26#39;m as fat as a pig when I come back;-)

Sorry if I am a bit thick but can someone tell me what Honeybee is - arriving in Goa for the first time next week - can%26#39;t wait...

Honebee is local brandy, i dont think its anything like french brandy, but very very nice. Its less than £2 for a 70cl bottle

Oneday trip from Delhi to Agra (Tal Mahal)

I found planty options in the internet, but may be somebody can share some valuable info. What is the prefered travel agency I should use, etc.

    Please advise,

    Thanks and Regards,

    Jaipur Experience!

We were in Jaipur for 5 days %26amp; it was a great experience. Did Chowki Dhani the 1st night. Amazing food, plz go hungry if u want to do justice to the authentic Rajasthani food.

Amber fort was the best part of the trip. A definite must. Engage a guide-it%26#39;s worth it. Also visit the Kali temple in the complex.

Ajmer %26amp; Pushkar is a whole day trip. Leave early so that u can fit in some shopping in Pushkar.

Now, the best part-Shopping. Cotton Kurtis, nighties, skirts %26amp; shirts can be bought in Gulabchand. They have a few outlets. We went to the one opp. Rajkamal theater near Mac Donalds on M.I road.

For Jewelery go to Nehru Market near Hawa Mahal. All kinds of stuff there. Even quality silver items.

Will definitely be going back to Rajasthan soon:)

    Jaipur Experience!

seems to be a great holiday.

    Jaipur Experience!

Gulabchand Laxmi Narayan is opposite Raj Mandir cinema in Mall 21. GCLN, as it is popularly known is a little known Jaipur secret. Now it seems the the secret is out. The old shop is in the khanda next to the temple at the corner of Hawa Mahal, near the choodiwalas

Tried out Spice Garden as per u%26#39;r advice. Great place, good food %26amp; very close to Jaipur Club where we were staying. Only disappointment was that Cottons was closed for the day:( So no shopping, though we got to see a puppet show.

    Trip Report

Came back last Tue.Wanted to leave it a while to see how I really felt as journey and jet lag can colour opinions.Flew with FirstChoice/Thomson was really good food entertainment ace.As stated by others ,arrival is hectic to say the least but was greeted by Charlotte Thomson rep who was lovely and gave us all water for transfer.Very early am transfer from airport is culture shock, hubby was a bit anxious I was going to want to go home.As we got nearer Baga sun came out and things looked better still rubbish everywher but you also see the colours everywhere and meeting an elephant on the street was exciting.

Stayed at Santiago.Have wrote review so won%26#39;t repeat my feelings but it wasn%26#39;t great.Location however was ace once Charlotte told us short cut.

First night on beach for cocktails I burst out crying when we said No to 2 little girls trying to sell me necklaces.Needless to say that I soon toughend up and realise this was something I would have to deal with.Second day visited Children Walking Tall at Mango House with big bag of booty -well worth the visit, kids so happy , well behaved and polite.

Baga beach was ok bit crowded but not as much as Calangute. There was still loads of sunbeds and shacks to choose from.Bottle Bay looks nice and food excellent but expensive compaired to others .We went to Big Banana one day and spent some time talking to the man in charge he was lovely.Spent most time in Andrews where staff were less pushy and food, drink ultra cheap.Had tuna sizzler at Lucky Star that must have had about £15 of tuna by sainsburys prices and was lovely.

Did trips through Thomson(yes we know we could have done cheaper-but lazy).Did the falls which was ace and overnight to Cola Beach in Rajastani tents so romantic.Struggled with heat and humidity ,mozzie bites and both had Delhi Belly(first ever in both our cases),tennacity of taxi drivers to take you somewhere when you say no,sellers trying to sell you things you dont want but I guess thats Goa very different from last 4 hols to various places in Italy.Did buy loads as got some real bargins .Ace hammock, tshirts for kids, ankle chains usual stuff.

Did lovely walk(route march from aBaga to Anjuna along the cost stopped at little shack half way which was gorgeous.Highlight was hiring Enfied and getting out and about went to Ashwen and Morjim we loved it there so peaceful.Nerve wracking journey though but bizzarly once you are part of the traffic it has a kind of flow and people are actually less aggressive that in England.Visited Panjim at night ate at Quartermasters on the river meal was lovely.Had an odd experience at Fort Aguada when Indian family arrived and all wanted to be filmed with me -don%26#39;t think they had ever seen someone put sun protection on and were facinated. Also slightly uncomfortable when abou 7 young Indian boys run over to me sat on my own in the sea and started filming each other practically sat on me but got up and walked away. When we left we were unsure about how we felt but I thinkif we had been happier with our hotel our experience may have been a more pleasant one.

On saying that we wouldn%26#39;t rule Goa out but would probably go far north or south as wasn%26#39;t keen on commercialism all the time, but its a big old world out there and I intend to see as much as I can.

    Trip Report

I love reading trip reports from fellow travellers and yours does not disappoint. Due to travel out on Sunday (Goan virgins) and not looking forward to the airport either. Got one night at Rajastani tents, sounds good from what you say. Going South for our two week stay as do not want anything too commercialised.

Time to start saving for your next holiday now!!

    Trip Report

    Great report FW

    Thanks

Thanks was worried people may have thought I was negative. Although there were things that I was not keen on and was a bit anti on my return after a few days after the dust settled I ealised the good points outweighed the bad.

Enjoyed reading your report - the good and the bad. Suggest you try the south next time (maybe Cavelossim) as it%26#39;s not as manic as Baga/Calangute and not as dirty either. Glad to hear you%26#39;re not ruling Goa out for future but you%26#39;re right it is a big world with lots of different places to visit.

Good honest post, loved it, warts an all.

its what people want to hear, real opinions.

    Bet you go back though!!!

    thanks, BOB.

    hi great read x

Enjoyed reading that fw, thankyou :)

Great report. I don%26#39;t get asked so often these days (age, sigh) to have my photograph taken with people, but it does still happen - and outside Goa it happens all the time. I don%26#39;t know how many mantelpieces I%26#39;m on!!

Thanks for taking the trouble to share that with us all.

    a lovely honest report.

love the elephant bit, that did it for me as well.

    thanks

    ian........

  • Transit through Chennai airport

I am transiting through Chennai from Columbo to London, changing from Sri Lankan to BA (Business Class). I arrive at 20.00 and leave the following morning at 05.25. Anyone know if I can stay in BA lounge overnight? Any alternatives?

    Transit through Chennai airport

    Hi

I am not sure if i read you right. Are you flying the Colombo Chennai sector on a Srilankan and the Chennai London sector on a BA ?

If so, then you will possibly have a through check in to London at Colombo. You will possibly be given a transit status at Chennai where you will be taken through a seperate transit corridor (after minimal immigration forms if any) to the departure lounge (where the business lounges are located) when you arrive into Chennai.

The Business lounge is a common one for a few combined airlines at Chennai and i am sure you will be able to while away your time at the lounge.

    Rajan

    Transit through Chennai airport

    Thanks for quick response

I flew out LGW to Kovai a couple of years ago and used the Chennai business lounge on the way home. As already stated, it%26#39;s shared. It%26#39;s not large, but it had food, drink, toilets, newspapers and some comfy chairs. Just oposite was a ';last chance'; gift shop. Just down the corridor was final checks and onto the plane.

Now flying in and switching staright to internal was an experience - first time in India and the ';business lounge'; was a sectioned off bit of the cafeteria with two pots - one curry, one rice - being warmed by tea candles and some of the worst coffee I%26#39;ve ever tasted.

Food in the international business lounge was restricted, but nice

    Botox in Calangute

Can anyone tell me if there are decent places to have botox in Calangute, and how much it costs for one area?

    Botox in Calangute

No, but could you tell me if you went ahead %26amp; had it done, if so how good was it %26amp; how much. If any good where did you have it done a i%26#39;m going to calangute next weekend.

I do not know if he does botox only know him re cosmetic surgery at the Vintage. Will see later if I can find out.

Did go to a Botox Clinic at Wendle Rodicks (he is a Goan dress designer) boutique but was not impressed with the set up, very clean and everything but the staff seemed a little too unexperienced for our liking.

I was in Goa in Feb and I had just my forhead done, between the eyebrows at Carvalho%26#39;s dentist in Cavellosim, opposite the Haathi Mahal. Cost £90 and would definately go back when I go back to Goa.

    Very professional and great result.

    Hi Evertongary,

Reading the previous reply about botox costing £90, i would get it done in England as its roughly the same price. If it goes wrong, as it occasionally does, you can go back to the clinic and get it rectified. I work at a cosmetic clinic and i know i%26#39;d feel safer. Thats just my opinion of course, they are probably very good in Goa.

    Kalathil Lake Resort

Hello, I spent Feb 14 - 21 at this resort. I traveled from New York State, USA.

I found the resort to be very peaceful and relaxing along the lake. One of my favorite memories was having an early morning breakfast in the restuarant, which overlooks the waters, and watching the fisherman taking in thier daily catch.

I found the accomodations, help and food all to my liking. Especially the food! It was obvious that hospitality was important to the entire staff.

I met a couple and a family also from the USA during my stay. There was one young couple having photos taken of themselves. They were just married. We all agreed that our stay was enjoyable.

In closing, I am certain you would enjoy the resort.

    visa farce

after reading everyones reveiws about the visas we thought it cant happen to us.we are off to calangute on saturday nite,4 weeks ago we sent passports away with all the required documents including the prepaid registered envelope so there would be know problems. so on monday still no passports eileen phones edinburgh who tell her that they have not received any mail from us. so after ah few tears she calls the helpline and they tell us the passports are available for collection in edinburgh. so after ah 2 hour drive i get to the immigration, they get stroppy because you do not know your passport no,i also had to have photograghic proof and i could not get my wifes passport as she had to be there in person. so tommorrow we are off to edinburgh once more. so i would probably advise anyone to make ah day of it when going to get your visa s. hand it in personally then lunch ah few drinks and HOPEFULLY pick it up in the after noon,

    visa farce

That sounds a bit odd to me. However, as far as I know there%26#39;s absolutely no chance of you handing the passports in in the morning and getting them back the same day. Even if you go in person, you have to go back a couple of days later to collect the passports with visas.

    visa farce

hi lgg i thought last year was ah farce there was ah visa surgery in glasgow which supposedly opened @9am i arrived @8 30am thinking i would be first in the queue when i got inside there must have been about 90 people in front oh me so i waited nearly 3 hours to be called, the indian guy was only checking the form and said thats fine (i thought i was getting the visas)he then gave me another ticket and said be back for 1pm i got there @1250 as i sat down the three indian guys who were giving out the visas decided to go for lunch. which created at bit of bother by all the people who were waitin, after about 70 mns they all came back ,and 3hrs after that it was my my turn to collect our visas. so after all that i thought it would be easier this year to do it all by post HEY BUT WHAT DO I KNOW

Oh, I%26#39;m not disbelieving you - I had a miserable time last year and the year before getting visas in London for much the same reason. I was just pointing out that you can%26#39;t hand passports in and pick up visa on the same day any more.

Having had to apply for visas for the last three years, i have actually found this system to be the most stress free of them all.

There were a few teething problems at the start of the season, but i think the VFS have got there act together.

If you follow all the advice given on here by MEERKAT and others i don%26#39;t believe you should have a problem.

    IMHO

There is definitely not a same day service, sorry. I%26#39;m lucky to live quite near the VFS office in Hayes, filled all the forms out via the website first, dropped passport and forms off, they stated quite clearly that it then takes 3 working days to process. You can track online exactly when the passport is ready for collection. Picked passport back up yesterday, took about 5 minutes. I know this advice isn%26#39;t much use to anyone living a long way from the offices, but VFS seem quite efficient to me.

As LGG and the others have said, you can no longer get visa issued on the same day.

In London i believe there are 3 places where you can hand in your application, Goswell Road EC2, Victoria and Hayes. I took mine into Goswell Road, tracked it online and went back 3 days later to collect it.

    wine in baga

hi all - we%26#39;re off to Baga next week and wondering if anyone can recall any restaurants that sell drinkable red wine! we went to most of the restaurants in arpora last year and only found wine in all-spice that was remotely drinkable. we found most of the stuff tasted either like cheap port or some sort of home-made disaster! we ain%26#39;t connoisseurs by the way - only drink the house wine in pubs but we do like some plonk with a meal!! - cheers

    wine in baga

i agree the red wine tastes like port %26amp; white chemically. Didnt find any good wines last year tried all those recommended. This year we plan to take a red %26amp; white wine box duty free shouldnt have any problems drinking in hotel as we are al but when we eat out plan to drink cocktails

    wine in baga

Most restaurants sell imported wines now but they are not cheap, about the same price as you would pay here eating out.

Having just got back and missing Goa already...If you like red try Sula Satori Merlot, Kim Faa sell this although it%26#39;s not on their wine list, it%26#39;s widely available in other restaurants and about 460 Rs in the wine shop. If you like rose, try Madeara Rose only 198 Rs from the wine shop and about 500 Rs in the restaurants, again it%26#39;s not always listed. For white try Sula Sauvignon Blanc. The rose and whites are fine if they%26#39;re served cold and in an ice bucket that has lots of ice in and not water and a few cubes!! Happy hols :)

Imported Aussie wines are expensive - Hardy%26#39;s Stamp Shiraz about 拢20 a bottle. Most Indian Red wines are more like port, but we did have some merlot from %26#39;Chateau Indage%26#39; (700r) which was drinkable - especially after the first couple of glasses!

I have yet to find a wine here in Goa where I think ';that%26#39;s nice'; when I taste it and also reasonably priced. IMHO it all tastes like cheap plonk at non cheap plonk prices. I would expect to like it after the first taste at the prices they charge for it.

The more expensive stuff is ok but would not want to pay more than UK price for a bottle of drinkable wine.

Brilliant news. I%26#39;ve never used the visa surgery before though I know plenty on here have. Think I would rather use a surgery if there%26#39;s one local as it saves any chance of your passport %26#39;disappearing%26#39; in the system. Thanks for the info.

Trip Report Rajasthan, Delhi, Agra and Varanasi Sept. 2008

    Hi forum

It%26#39;s time to give something back for all the great advice I%26#39;ve received on this and other India forums.

My husband and I visited Rajasthan, Delhi, Agra and Varanasi on a 3 week tour in September-October this year. Loved every minute of it! After considering several tour companies in our native Denmark we decided to book our trip with Indian Panorama, which is an Indian tour company, instead. We are so glad we did! We emailed with the owner, Faith Pandian, all through the process and received great advice on every aspect of our trip. Always very honest about our options and costs. I cannot recommend Indian Panorama highly enough - everyone was always on time, we always got what we were promised in every hotel (and frequently more in the form of great rooms, early breakfasts etc. etc). I never really imagined a trip this long being this flawless.

Our trip included all our hotels, train tickets Agra-Varanasi, flights Varanasi-Delhi, overnight private desert trip in Jaisalmer, two private boatrides in Varanasi, guides in every city and a car and driver the whole way. One of the best choices we made, was to upgrade our car from a Tata Indigo to a Toyota Innova, even though there were only two of us. It cost us app. $US 200 extra for the whole trip, but meant that we had lots of space and legroom, which was great on a long trip. We were lucky enough to have Raj as our driver, an absolute sweetheart. Kind, considerate, protective and a great sense of humour. Having a driver who is also good company means the world, when you spend close to 3 weeks together!

Below I will review our trip, but I won%26#39;t mention everything we saw or experienced - I will simply try to give you our best tips on what we loved most and for off the beaten track places we found along the way.

    Our itinerary was as follows:

    1.

Arrival Delhi early morning, stayed at the Hotel Florence Inn in Karol Bagh. Very nice and clean, plus the staff was kind enough to make us breakfast at 5.30 am the following morning. Our favourite place in Delhi was the Gandhi Smrtri (spelling??), where Mahatma Gandhi lived for the last few months of his life and was shot. Very peaceful and wonderful place and great displays in the museum. Had dinner at Chor Bizarre - nothing special.

    2.

Left for Mandawa at 6 am. Throughout our trip we chose early morning starts in order to arrive in time to do some exploring on the same day. We mostly left at 7 am though. Stayed at Castle Mandawa, lovely hotel, with lovely pool area. On the way there we stopped at Rani Sati Mandir in Jhunjunu, which is a temple to the Sati Mata cult, who show reverence for women who committed sati/suicide on their husbands%26#39; funeral pyres. Beautiful and interesting temple, one of the richest in India, apparently, but hardly visited by foreigners. Mandawa is a cute little town with quite a few painted havelis which can be taken in on a walking tour.

    3.

We left in the morning for Bikaner, but stopped in Fatehpur to take in a few of the painted havelis here, which I thought were more interesting than the ones in Mandawa, certainly in a better state of preservation.

In Bikaner we stayed at the Laxmi Niwas Palace, which was gorgeous. We arrived in time for a late lunch, which is served in a beautiful restaurant. Very good Indian food. The fort was definately worth visiting, we found it to be one of the most interesting in Rajasthan. We we%26#39;re tired so opted for dinner at the hotel, even though we normally avoid buffets like the plague. This was much better than average and helped along by a beautiful setting in a large courtyard.

Our room was huge, oldfashioned and a fun experience. Oh, and the hotel has great massages at about 1000 rps an hour.

    4.

We visited the rat temple in Deshnok. At the stall across from the temple, where you can leave your shoes (not to be worn in the temple) one of the attendants for some reason chose to give us little slip on covers, so we didn%26#39;t have to go barefoot. We didn%26#39;t ask for them, but if you are very concerned about the rats I suppose you could. We very lucky enough to see the white rat (which is actually sort of orange), and are waiting for all the luck it is supposed to bring. Seriously though, we loved the visit, because it is so unlike anything we have ever seen. Yes there are lots of rats, but they don%26#39;t come running at you. Don%26#39;t miss it.

Back in Bikaner we had lunch at Gallops, situated almost opposite the fort. Very good Indian food and a lovely restaurant with a more modern casual decor than most of the places we ate.

We ventured into the old part of the city, to the surprise of our guide as there was nothing there for tourists (it%26#39;s a quote!). We were glad we did. We got to watch everyday life in the bazar close up, with no one trying to sell us anything, as there were no souvenir shops. We bought lovely silk and rajasthani skirts at local prices and had a great time just looking around.

    5.

We left for Jaisalmer in the morning, arriving early afternoon. We stayed at the Garh Jaisal Haveli, which was our favourite hotel/B%26amp;B on our trip. Small place with lovely decor and glorious windowseats with a view of the city and the desert beyond. It has a roof terrace with even more amazing views and good, cheap Indian and continental food.Breakfast was lovely and served whenever it suits you (even ridiculously early). The hotel is situated in the fort, close to the entrance. Beautiful and strange city, we spent ages just watching people in the main square Gandhi Chowk. Here you will also find the Nachana Haveli, where the saffron restaurant is. Eat there, the food is wonderful!

    6.

We went on an overnight desert trip in the Khuri area, satarting with a jeep ride from Jaisalmer. It was arranged by the hotel beforehand, so we were able to leave all our luggage there. We went to a village, where there were also huts for tourists to stay in, so we had the choice of those or staying in the desert overnight. We went on a private tour with only us and our cameldrivers. Apparently most people go for a camelride for about an hour before sunset and then return to the village for dinner and a folkdancing/singing show. We chose to stay in the dunes after about 1½ hours of camelriding. We then sat in the dunes as it got darker and darker until eventually the stars brought a bit of light. We ate our dinner in total darkness and talked to the cameldrivers (who didn%26#39;t speak a word of English!) and took turns singing to each other. Other than than the occasional camel moving about all was quiet. It was a wonderful night, nothing to do but talk in the darkness. We were glad we opted to stay in the desert rather than participate in a larger group dinner.

    7.

We rode back to meet the jeep early in the morning and saw lots of deer on the way. Spent the rest of the day in Jaisalmer. Especially enjoyed feeding the catfish with the locals at Tilon-ki-Pol. There are so many of them, you think they will crawl onto land... Also don%26#39;t miss the wonderfully carved havelis, of which we thought the Patwa Haveli were the most impressive or the cenotaphs at Bada Bagh.

Ate at the Surja Guesthouse right next to the Garh Jaisal - super food! Don%26#39;t mistake it for the Surya, which is right next to it, but has pretty awful food!

    8.

This day we headed for Jodhpur. The fort and Jaswant Thada were both wonderful and afforded great views of the city in all it%26#39;s blue beauty. We stayed at the Pal Haveli, which offers a great location right next to the Sadar Market. It has a roof restaurant with stunning views of the fort and really yummy food. Our room (suite, actually) was not restored to the extent that many other hotels are, but was charming and clean.

    9.

On this day we had one of the best experiences of our trip. We had arranged for a daytrip to the Bishnoi area independently. We started out at 6 am. We went with Gemar Bhati. He is an independent guide, who believes strongly in sustainable tourism and comes from the area himself, but lives in Jodhpur. He speaks excellent English and has a tourism degree. He managed to take us to visit two families in a very nice way, which didn%26#39;t make us fel like we were intruding, as their lives were not made into a zoo or worse. They were the kind of visits where the children are interested in you for a few minutes, and then go back to playing, and are not paraded for photos. I found his way very respectful. He told us that he never takes big groups, only 2-4 people and not every other day. After this he offered to take us for a walking tour of the blue part of the city, Brahmpura (I think that%26#39;s what the neighbourhood is called), were it seemed that no tourists came. I cannot recommend him enough. His contact details are as follows:

In the evening we had dinner at the Kalinga Hotel in Station Road with all the local well-to-dos. Great white tablecloth dining experience and one of the best meals we had on our trip.

    10.

We visited the temples at Ranakpur on our way to Udaipur. They were absolutely beautiful as is the setting. Worth the long drive!

In Udaipur we stayed at the Jagat Niwas Palace. Really lovely hotel, nicely decorated and great views of the lake and the Lake Palace. Make sure you make reservations for a room with a view - even though you get the same view from the restaurant you won%26#39;t tire of it.

    11.

    Udaipur

The fort was interesting and women has that little something extra: an Anokhi shop. Gorgeous cotton printed clothing in designs that work in Europe too. I fell in love with it and bought lots at prices that are higher than in the markets, but the quality is great.

Right next to the Jagat Niwas there are a few very good tailors as well - not the cheapest in town, but the craftmanship was excellent. If you fancy having old saris made into the design of you choice, we found Udaipur to be the best place for it in Rajasthan. The think about the old silk saris is that they are soft as opposed to new ones. The choice in Udaipur is huge.

The Jagdish Temple was beautiful too and very welcoming.

We had dinner at the Ambrai at Amet Haveli. A beautiful setting in a garden with views of the Lake Palace and the City Palace. Food was wonderful and so was the ambience.

    12.

Visited Chittaurgarh in the morning. Make sure you climb the tower of Vijay Stambh to enjoy stunning views of the temples around it and the fort.

We arrived at Shahpura Bagh in Shahpura in the afternoon. It is a large family home, which has been in the family for generations and has now been converted into a hotel. It is situated in the countryside, but not fra from the town. As soon as we got there we felt calm and relaxed and spent the afternoon exploring by the nearby lake and relaxing in our room. Rooms are huge and beautifully decorated, very simple and elegant. At Shahpura Bagh you have all meals with the family and other guests. You meet for drinks in the colonial style sitting room and then have wonderful homecooked Rajasthani food. The hosts were interesting and knowledgeable and the other guests likewise. It is definitely off the beaten path, but in a very pleasant, understated luxurious way.

    13.

We went for a jeepride in the countryside and for a walk in the town in the late afternoon. There is an old stepwell worth seeing, but no other sights as such. The attraction is more so that this is a relatively large town in a rural setting, and walking about you get a good idea of the life of people living there. We felt very welcome and to some extent like a novelty. A lot of fun.

    14.

We arrived in Ajmer at around lunchtime and decided not to head straight for Pushkar,as most visitors do. We were glad we didn%26#39;t. We stopped at the Nashiyan Jain Temple, where there is a bizarre mirrored room several stories high with a golden glittering display of a scene with temples, animals, people and what have you. Strange, but fun.

We walked through Dargah Bazaar to the Dargah Khwaja Sahib, which is a huge marble complex, where the sufi saint Khwaja Muin-ud-din-Chisti was buried. So it is a Musim shrine complete with mosques, tombs etc. You cannot bring a camera. It was stunning - serene and noisy at the same time, lots af visitors/pilgrims. If you walk about quitly you will get to see the prayers and the worshipping first hand. It feels like a world of it%26#39;s very own, and made a lasting impression on us. If you are going to Pushkar don%26#39;t miss it!

Visiting Pushkar was something of an anticlimax. Walking the ghats was interesting, the view frm our hotel, Pushkar Palace was great, but the whole town seemed tired and scruffy. And I don%26#39;t mean in the normail Indian way, where litter is everywhere etc - this was more a case of the whole atmosphere being scruffy. Hard to explain.

As for the Pushkar Palace it was an ok hotel, but had it not been right on the lake, it would have been a different story. The food was below mediocre, the staff was indifferent and the rooms less than clean. But having checked it on Tripadvisor before booking we knew this and had chosen it strictly for the views.

One nice thing in Pushkar was watching the sunset from the Sunset Café. Go early!

    15.

Once again leaving early, we reached Jaipur for lunch and a swin in the pool at Alsisar Haveli, where we stayed in a suite, as regular rooms are quite small. The room was beautiful with lovely paintwork on beams and walls. The whole hotel is very beautiful and the staff was very welcoming and helpful. Food is ok, but not great, but breakfast was the exception, and a great start to the day.

My husband played golf at the Rambagh Golf Club. You can book ahead via email. Greenfee including a caddie and renting equipment cost a fraction of European prices, I think about $US 30.

I headed for the Anokhi store (can%26#39;t remember the address, it%26#39;s on their website www.anokhi.com) and shopped like a madwoman. There are a few god malls in Jaipur as well, should you be so inclined.

    16.

We went to Amber Fort in the morning. Do go early, as the line for elephant rides can get quite long. Plus, if you go later, there may be no elephant rides, as they are only allowed to go up a certain amount of times each day.

In the late afternoon we opted not to go to the most commonly visited bazaars and instead we took a rickshaw to the Suraj Pole Gate and walked through the various bazaars all the way to Chand Pole. This was great, no hassle to buy and all stalls and shops were aimed at local costumers. Food, clothing, kitchen utensils, religious paraphernalia, jewelry....it was all there. A great walk!

We ate at the Peshawari Restaurant in Hotel Rajputana Sheraton (or did the name of the hotel change?). One of the best meals of the entire trip, the lamb melted in our mouthes as did the Bukhara dal. Pricey for India, though, about $US 80 for two, but woth it for a treat.

    17.

We visited Fatehpur Sikri, with the highlight being the the Jama Masjis Mosque. Tis was at the end of the Ramadan, so it may have been livelier than usual, but it was very interesting watching big families making a day of a visit to the mosque. There was music, stalls with religious trinkets and lots of people. And the mosque itself was beautiful.

In Agra we stayed at the Howard Park Plaza, which is conveniently situated near the Taj Mahal. A hotel without much personality, but very comfortable.

We went to the Taj Mahal for sunset. Everyone who has ever commented on this forum is right: you expect a tourist trap, but it is indescribably beautiful in the soft light right before sunset.

    18.

We started the day early, and left the hotel at about 5.20 am. to be at the gates to Taj Mahal at 5.40 am. Most guides will tell you to leave your hotel at 6 am, but that is basically too late, if you want to enjoy the monument without to many fellow visitors. When we reached the ticket sales booth, which opens at 6 am, there were about 30 people there and 10 minutes later there were a hundred. Somehow our guide worked magic, and we were the first ones through the security check. I%26#39;m sure everyone else thought we were mad, but we ran all the way up to the entrance where you first see the Taj, which meant that we had a couple of minutes totally alone at that huge monument. I cannot describe how it felt to see it there in solitude. If you can, try to get that moment, you will never forget it.

At night we took the train to Varanasi. If, like us, you are flying in and out of Delhi, and going to Varanasi as your last stop before going back to Delhi, you might get your tour company to take your bags to Delhi, so you only have a small bag with a bit of whatever you need for at couple of days in Varanasi. This makes the train trip so much easier, plus many hotels in Varanasi are not easily accessible by car, so no carrying luggage around.

We travelled 2nd class AC, which was fine, and we were comfortable.

    19.

We arrived in Varanasi late in the morning - the train was delayed for three hours. We had brought some fruit and bisquits along - might be a good idea, as I think the trains are often delayed. We stayed at the Rashmi Guest House, which we loved as much as everyone else on Tripadvisor. We had booked a room with a view of the Ganges, do that if you can get one.

On our first day we walked around the ghats and the chowk. Be ready to spend lots of time just walking, sitting on the ghats and watching the theatre that it is for the uninitiated. We went for a sunset boatride, but got off to a late start at 5.30 pm. If you are at all interested in taking photos you should start at no later than 4.30 pm. The stretch between Dasashwamedh Ghat, where you can watch the fire aarti just after sunset and Manikarnika Ghat (burning ghat)is the most intense and where you will find the most people.

We ate at the Dolphin Restaurant at the hotel - very, very good.

    20.

The day started with a sunrise boatride at 5 am - gorgeous light and wonderful scenery on the ghats. After this we took a stroll through the narrow alleys around the Vishwanath temple, fun to see the day getting started, shops opening etc.

Later in the day we visited Sarnath, interesting to visit an important Buddhist site after all the Hindu and Jain temples, the Stupas are amazing.

Another interesting place is the Mother India Temple with the large relief map of India.

    21.

Back to Delhi by plane. One thing that might be good to know is that lithium batteries for digital cameras are not allowed in your hand luggage, so you have to put them in your checked luggage. On our international flight it was exactly the opposite, go figure...

This was a long one, I hope it will be of use to some of you. Feel free to ask anything! And yes, we loved India, and are definitely coming back.

Trip Report Rajasthan, Delhi, Agra and Varanasi Sept. 2008

A nice %26amp; detailed report. It%26#39;ll beneftr future visitors.

    Thanks for taking out time.

  • face make up remover
  • santana hotel - stayed there or planning to ?

First time in Goa, flying out on the 4th April, and would like to find out more about the Santana Hotel. Anyone stayed there ? Best rooms ? Best beach shacks ? Would love any feedback ? Cheers.

santana hotel - stayed there or planning to ?

Hi Lfcac, You%26#39;ve picked a good hotel for your first trip! We stayed at the Santana last year and loved it. The only drawback was the tiny pool, but they now have another bigger one so I hear. The Calamari shack just at the bottom of Santana%26#39;s garden is good but we preferred a walk to the left and returned to the one we have used on previous trips. We%26#39;re also going on 4th April via Bangalore. We liked the rooms nearer reception although our first room at the back of the complex had a separate kitchen/sitting area. All have air con which is a must in April. Ask for Carol and Anne and we%26#39;ll meet for a Kings and give you some more tips if you like. Five weeks today-I can%26#39;t wait.

santana hotel - stayed there or planning to ?

Stayed close by the Santana, looked to be a nice hotel. Can thoroughly recommend the Calamari, is a lot more than the average beach shack. Excellent food and service. Comfy sun beds with clean towels supplied - ah wish I was there now!!!!!!!!!

Great - Thanks for your reply, sounds like we have picked the right resort and hotel.

If you have been before could you advise us on what it is like for mossie%26#39;s and ting ?

We are also flying out via Bangalore on 4th April staying for a fortnight at Santana. All we%26#39;ve heard is good things and getting really excited now. From last review on this site, am assuming that there are constructional works going on next door, so may be worth us asking for rooms away from this??!! Anyone got anymore information on this and what the best rooms to ask for are? Thanks. See you there Lfcac.

We%26#39;re flying out to Goa next weekend and are staying at Santana Beach Resort for 2 weeks. I%26#39;ll post a review when we return.

I am going to be there from the 3rd April-I have heard, and read, that it is a nice hotel. Have been to Goa too many times to count now but, never stayed here. Looking forward to it!

Will see you there. Are you counting down the days ?

Certainly looking forward to some sun!!!! We%26#39;%26#39;re going to Mumbai for a few days first then, %26#39;%26#39;popping down%26#39;%26#39; to Goa.

    See you there!

You will not be dsappointed with this hotel, as for the building work going on next door, we never heard anything from our room and we were quite close to the works but there was some disturbance if you chose to spend the day at the hotel pool (the new one) but it was not unbearable, just a bit of a nuisance, anyway the lads working on the site seemed to spend most of the day sunbathing on the roof of the building having a birds eye view of the ladies in their bikinis, must admit we found it amusing!!!
