Bangaram Enquiry

We are planning a holiday in India next year with 3 nights in Mumbai, 6 nights in the Lakshadweeps and one night in Kochi.

We have been to the Maldives several times and the Lakshadweeps sound great. We are looking forward to snorkeling and peace for a week! From what we have read the food is basic but we can expect some very good seafood. A few questions:

1) How basic is the accommodation in Bangaram? I have read several reviews where people complained about the standard of rooms (e.g. smells and poor furnishing)! This goes back to 2007 and more recent posts seem more positive. Have the rooms been improved? I am not expecting luxury, but would like a clean and comfortable room! I understand that there is no hot water, surprising that they do not make use of solar panels.

2) Is there good snorkeling accessible directly from the island or are we going to have to take a boat?

3) We have never had problems with flies and mosquitoes in the Maldives, do we need to take any protection with us for Bangaram?

Any other advice for our trip would be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Tony

Bangaram Enquiry

Hi Antony

I was at Laks last year and a few years earlier as well. There is definitely a lot of improvement at the overall level at all the three leading stay options - Bangaram, Agatti and Kadamath.

The rating of the accomodation is precisely in the order as above and Bangaram is a shade above the rest in terms of stay and food. Accomodation was definitely good (not smelly or anything else) when we were there. I was even surprised at the improvement of standards at Agatti (again, nothing near star category - but basic, clean, neat and comfy)

If i remember right, Snorkelling at Bangaram, Agatti and Kadamat are directly off the island. In fact at Agatti and Kadamat you can even do a Scuba dive off the island, while at Bangaram it is preferable to take a very short boat ride.

However, if you want to do reef snorkelling or reef diving, you will need to take a boat out to the reefs, which are about a mile away from the islands.

We were there during April last year and the previous time during October. We never had any mosquies issue during those times, though the days in April get really hot and you will need loads of suncream.

Hope this info helps. If there is anything specific, please do ask. There were a few posts related to Laks earlier and do read my review of the same at TA
