Money

Hi As mentioned we are planning to travel from Delhi and up to Kulu, Manali, Dharamsala,Rishikesh in 2 weeks time. Please advise re money access. Is it easy to exchange Australian Dollars in all areas? Are ATMS available in all areas and can we use Visa card to withdraw money in above areas?

Any advice re money appreciated? Thank you

Visa ATMs are available everywhere in India. If you have an International card, you can withdraw money everywhere even in small cities also. But do keep some money handy as the ATM may not be working or ATM may refuse to pay up due to some reason.

All these places are tourist oriented specially Manali and Rishikesh, here you can find many official money changers. There are many unofficial ones also, but you may find difficult to change AUD with them as they are more oriented towards USD and Euros.

Don%26#39;t forget to notify your Credit Card companies where you are going and when. There can be trouble if you don%26#39;t.

(With credit being what it is lately, they may be more willing to decline service than usual)

Hi,

carry Travellers Cheque (USD) instead of carrying cash.

ATM%26#39;s are available at all these places but may not function... or else carry a pre-loaded Credit Card from Syndney (forex Credit Card) so that you can use often without withdrawing cash.

Money can be exchanged at any authorised counters

Please also be aware that the local ATMs have a daily limit for cash withdrawal, usually 20,000 or 25,000 rupees per day.

We tried changing pound sterling for rupees in our Delhi hotel. There was a maximum limit of US $200 in the hotel. We then tried going to a bank (can%26#39;t remember which one) - there was no proper queuing system in place, although a bloke there realised we were foreigners and directed us to a guy dealing with forex. He said that we could not change any money unless we had an account there.

Was advised to go to a Western Union - didn%26#39;t do it because of the hassle of traffic and queuing.

If you do end up going to a bank be prepared for a wait - one thing I realised very quickly was that any transaction requiring withdrawing money is not as easy as you might expect.

If you can find a working ATM that you can use go for it.
