India with children

Hi,

Does anybody have experience on where and how best to travel in India with children? I have a 7 and a 9 year old. I don%26#39;t have to go to Goa because I would prefer to see the indian India, I am very familiar with the latin culture already. I would love to be able to fly directly to a location where I could see the most typical things of India with short trips between locations.

Any suggestions?

If this is your first time to India, the Golden Triangle is a good option. There are many interesting things for children in the cities of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur.

Thank you Deepa!

Is there a season that is not very popular and expensive but still nice?

I have heard that in Genuary/February people make fires with garbage so it is polluted.

February would be a good time for us.

Also, how do I protect my children from being exposed to food poisoning?

Thanks a lot to anybody who would advice!

Dear Valentina -

February is a good month to travel to the Golden Triangle.

There is a festival called Lohri celebrated typically in Jan when there is one day when bonfires are lit. This is the only day when there is smoke.

If you pick a reasonably good hotel, you will not fall sick and neither will the children. The important thing is only to drink bottled water and avoid raw foods like salads (unless they are cut fresh in front of you).

Please see this post about eating options for children:

You need to protect them from mosquitoes. You can bring repellent, or buy locally here, there are good skin creams available.

Thank you.

Do you know if there are organized tours that are geared to families in the golden triangle? For example, shorter trips between stops, sightseeing not too focused on historical facts only?

I was told to hire a driver but I would not know where to start.

I think you will work out a special itinerary with a tour operator. Do a keyword search in the Delhi forum and several names should pop up. Build in special activities - elephant rides, contemporary puppet shows, interactive museums and craft workshops - instead of extensive sightseeing. I would say do the Golden Triangle + some a few more days in Rajasthan covering Jaisalmer (for desert safaris) and Ranthambore (for animal sightings).

Hi, valentina

your travel idea %26#39;see the Indian India%26#39; is nice way.

you can fly directly from Delhi/Mumbai to Rajasthan(Udaipur). and explore leisurly land of kings, camels and loulars.

give 2-3day Udaipur stay and take a driver and taxi from local travel agency drive to jodhpur via Ranakpur(milky marbel jain temple in lap of arravali hills.2days in jodhpur and drive to jaisalmer via osian(small desert town great temples and good option for less touristy camel trek) 1 night in desert, and next morning drive further across the desert to arrive last city in India jaisalmer. 2day is good for exploring golden fort and havelis(mainsion) there is a lake(only 2km from city centre) good to bring childern at lake side, if mansoon is good, you can go paddle boating on lake.

from jaisalmer you can drive Bikaner to see camel breading farm and special rat temple out of city. further drive to Shekhawati region(couple of nights) for painted havelis and arrive Jaipur(biggest city of Rajasthan) and to Agra via Baratpur(bird waching spot).

This region of Rajasthan(Udaipur-jodhpur-osian-jaisalmer-Bikaner-sekhawati-Jaipur-Agra-Delhi/next...

it good to explore with children as there are lot of open divers land small cities, towns, nature(desert, hills, birds camels) less traffic on roads.

there are enough good hotels.

february is good time not hot but nice and sunny.

nights are cold. good to bring warm clothing.

Cheers

Hello Valentina

Have a look at the following article about travelling with children in India, it has some very detailed and helpful information.

I%26#39;m not sure if a tour package is the way to go, 7 and 9 year olds will not take toowell to long distance car journeys, but would love train trips.

A car tour also isolates kids from India and interaction with Indian kids and families.

A 3-tier air con or a Sleeper Class (shorter distances) train trip is a wonderful way to meet Indian people who aren%26#39;t trying to seel you something, and to me, a train journey is one of the best %26#39;destinations%26#39; in India.
