malaria tablets

We are travelling to India in 3 weeks first to New Delhi, Agra, Ranthambore and Jaipur and then flying south to Kerala; Cochin, Periyar, Backwaters, Alleppy and finally Kovalam. What do people who have been/are already out there think about taking anti malaria tablets? Web sites here (UK) list Rajesthan and Kerala as very low risk and tablets not necessary but I still worry! We have had all our inoculations and have 50% deet spray, will this be enough?

Karen,

Just this morning, Ian has posted a report about malaria in the Kovalam forum. Do have a look. Low risk is not Nil risk.

If you type ';malaria tablets'; in the search box in the Goa and Kovalam forums, you will find plenty of discussions.

I know that the health professionals who advised two visitors we recently had from the UK stated that tablets were strictly not necessary for the areas we were visiting as long as they followed a strict protection regimen. The visitors were fine, but it is a personal decision and you really ought to check with your GP or practice nurse.

Remember, one infectious bite is all it takes

Oops! Ian posted that report in the Thiruvananthapuram Forum today

50% Deet, stay indoors at dusk which is when they are most hungry, use an electric plug in thingy in you room, keep windows/doors closed from dusk and also importantly keep the bathroom door closed at night as hotels usually have louver windows in the bathrooms and they find their way in. We have followed these precautions the last few years and dont get bitten. Have a good time as i am sure you will :)
